Welcome to the Cambridge Branch of the Society of Recorder Players.

We are based in the centre of Cambridge and welcome players of all abilities who are able to sight read music. If you are unsure of the standard required please come along for a free taster session. We play on a Wednesday evening during term time and have an annual playing day and of course you will meet other recorder players to play with at other times. We have all sizes of recorders and have two great basses and a contra bass, purchased with a grant awarded by the National Lottery Fund “Awards for All” scheme. These are available for use by members.

See our Events Page for information about forthcoming events.

Background:

The Cambridge Branch began as a small group in the early 1960s, meeting at Clare College before transferring to Chesterton Community College in the 1970s. Michael and Esther Sharman were outstanding in encouraging both experienced and beginner recorder players. We also benefited from the advice and encouragement of Anthony Rowland-Jones. Michael hosted a successful festival in 1980 and became chair of the National Committee. This tradition has continued with our former branch Chair, Vic Morris who raised the awareness of current approaches and innovations in recorder playing, through his former role as chair of the National Committee and at a local level.
